Double Standards

This song was written in response to two announcements made on consecutive days by one of Australia's domestic airlines. On day one, the airline stopped a mother from expressing breast milk in their domestic lounge. On day two, the same airline announced that dogs can travel with their owner in the seats on the plane.

The band thinks that the airline should take a good look at itself for displaying what we think are double standards.

Lyrics

Mama boards that morning flight, her baby by her side
Brings her breast pump in her bag, with nowhere safe to hide
Asks politely for some privacy, but gets told “find the loo”
“Express out of sight, folks don’t want your view”

Steward’s voice is distant, says “Sorry, that won’t fly”
Mama tries to reason, but rules just pass her by
She sits alone and wonders if the world’s gone off the rails
When suddenly a little dog starts wagging through the aisles

So here’s a dog in first class with a fancy purple lead
Allowed to roam the cabin, do anything he needs
But a mother’s simple kindness is denied for someone else
A dog at the back of the plane, just shat itself

News crews catch the story, passengers look upset
Mama’s sent for pumping milk behind a toilet set
While that ball of snowy fluff, praised for being calm
Leaves a mess that’s cleaned up by the steward in alarm

So here’s a dog in first class with a fancy purple lead
Allowed to roam the cabin, do anything he needs
But a mother’s simple kindness is denied for someone else
A dog at the back of the plane, just shat itself

One sets out to nourish, one just answers nature’s call
But only one’s got freedom underneath Virgin’s protocol

So here’s a dog in first class with a fancy purple lead
Allowed to roam the cabin, do anything he needs
Just ask for some compassion but watch who gets the help
A dog at the back of the plane, just shat itself
