Off The Rails

Off The Rails is a 4-track EP featuring the following songs.

As we have developed our repertoire, we have found ourselves drawn to the metropolitan and regional railway services in Victoria as suitable subject matter. Fair to say that we think that the title of the album is a great description of the services being provided by Metro and V-Line. This is as close to a political statement as we ever make.

1. Montague

Just outside of the Melbourne CBD in Port Melbourne, there is a street called Montague Street. There is an old railway bridge, built in 1914 and now used by light rail. Ever since, that bridge has become a target for oversized trucks, with freqeunt incidents where a truckie misjudges the height - the height that has been the same since 1914 - bringing the inner south-west to a stand still.

2. Stopping All Stations (Except East Richmond)

For those who grew up along the Belgrave and Lilydale rail lines, you could catch a train into and out of Melbourne through suburbs like Richmond, Hawthorn, Surrey Hills and Box Hill. Some services were express, skipping stations, along the way. But even the "stopping all stations" services NEVER stopped at East Richmond. One of the great Melbourne mysteries.

3. The 10:12 To Colac

Those of us who hail from regional Victoria are far too familiar with the concept of late running trains and/or train replacement coaches. When planning a trip to or from Melbourne, it is a genuine surprise when the train actually runs and runs on time.

Is it just us or should we be able to rely on the public transport between Victoria's two biggest cities? And as for the poor folks beyond Geelong in places like Colac ... it must drive them mad.

4. A Suburban Railway Line (Nobody Wants)

Originally released on our debut album, unreal, this lament sits comfortably on an EP called Off The Rails. An ever-growing number of billions of dollars are being spent (wasted?) on a railway line that joins two existing suburban lines, servicing people who won't use it, while the roads and public transport options in regional Victoria continue to be dreadful. Priorities need to be re-thought.
