The Wind Was Kind (featuring Polly Fonic)

In the summer of 2025 / 26, Victoria (Australia) endured a number of long hot summer days and, as always, bushfires in the regional areas of the state. One particular fire threatened the home of one of Artie's friends and when enquiring about their safety, the band was told there's be an update the next morning, depending on how wind changed overnight.

Happily the message came through - the wind was kind.

Lyrics

The sky was red and heavy that day,
Ash on the fence and fear in the hay,
We packed the car, the dogs, the frame,
And watched the hills begin to flame.

But the wind was kind, it turned around,
Carried the danger over new ground,
I whispered thanks to the empty sky,
For the breath of mercy passing by.

The creek ran dry, the grass was gold,
Stories of fire our fathers told,
We stood so still, we didn’t speak,
Till smoke rolled back across the creek.

Yes, the wind was kind, it changed its tune,
Blew soft and cool in the heat of noon,
And in that hush, I heard it sigh,
A quiet promise in the sky.

Some folks lost what they called home,
Some still wait for green to come,
But here I stand beneath the pine,
And thank the day the wind was kind.

Oh, the wind was kind, it turned around,
Carried the danger over new ground,
I whispered thanks, my heart still shy,
For the breath of mercy passing by.
